Gibson announced his intentions at the at the traditional Thursday morning opposition strategy meeting, claiming that he had the numbers to overthrow current Captain Taylor Walker.

Gibson lost the ballot 2-42.

The fallout from the spill has far reaching consequences, with Adelaide Reserves ruck man Paul Hunter offering his resignation after supporting the failed Gibson bid.

Walker was said to be surprised by Hunter’s offer, mainly because he didn’t know who he was.

The Gibson camp is said to have ruled out further challenges to the captaincy.

Gibson has been linked to Port Adelaide in the off-season, where it is believed that he would have a much stronger chance of gaining the leadership.
