The South Australian Liberal Party has been rocked today by revelations that a former star candidate, Adelaide Football Club Chief Operating Officer Nigel Smart has defected and will run for Nick Xenophon’s SA-BEST party in the upcoming State Election.
The Journal can exclusively reveal that the move comes after tensions between Smart and Liberal leader Steven Marshall boiled over at a recent Young Liberal fundraiser.
“Yeh look I had been mulling over my political future for a while, but it all came to a head when Marshall told those Chino wearing toffs that he thought Robert Shaw was a talented coach. I mean the guy’s an imbecile.”
“I’ve had conversations with Nick in the past and while I don’t agree with his stance on a lot of issues, at least we agree that I was robbed of the captaincy in 97. Bickley couldn’t lead himself out of a wet paper bag!”
Mr Xenophon however stated that Smart was not yet an endorsed candidate.
“Nigel is a great guy and brings a lot of experience to the team, but he will have to go through the same vetting process that all SA-BEST candidates are subjected to – a walk over hot coals.”
